If your skin reacts to almost everything you put on it, the first thing worth removing is fragrance. It is one of the most common reasons a moisturiser stings, tightens or flushes, and it hides in more products than most people expect — including ones labelled natural.
A genuinely fragrance-free moisturiser has no added perfume and no essential oils. That second part matters. Essential oils are natural, but to reactive skin they are still fragrance, and they can be just as likely to cause a problem. So "fragrance-free" and "made with calming essential oils" are not the same claim, and the difference shows up on the back of the pack, not the front.
There is a second decision underneath the fragrance question: cream or balm. Most face creams are mostly water, which means they also need preservatives and often a longer ingredient list to hold everything together. A waterless balm skips that. It is concentrated oils, butters and a little wax, so a small amount goes a long way and there is simply less in the jar to react to.
Bare Face Balm is built around that idea. It is fragrance-free, made without essential oils, and waterless — jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, mango butter, beeswax and vitamin E, and nothing else. You warm a small amount between your fingertips until it melts, then press it into clean, slightly damp skin. It feels comfortable rather than coated. If you prefer something lighter to start, Bare Face Oil is three certified organic oils and nothing else.
No moisturiser is right for every reactive skin, and we would never tell you this one is. What we can tell you is exactly what is in it, which is the part that actually helps when you are trying to work out what your skin tolerates. Patch test first — a small amount on the inner arm or jaw for a couple of days — especially if your skin reacts easily.
FAQs
Is fragrance-free the same as unscented?
No. Unscented products can still contain masking fragrance to cover an ingredient smell. Fragrance-free means no added fragrance at all. Check the ingredient list for added perfume and essential oils.
Can a balm replace my moisturiser?
For many people with dry or reactive-feeling skin, yes. A waterless balm is a concentrated moisturiser. Use a small amount on damp skin so it spreads and absorbs rather than sitting on top.
Will it sting?
It is made without the most common culprits — added fragrance and essential oils — but no product can promise it won't react on your skin specifically. Patch test before regular use.
