Olive Oil
Ingredient field note

Olive Oil

Olea europaea L.

Cold-pressed

Olive oil is a rich botanical oil used when a formula needs deeper softness and a more substantial moisturising finish. Its naturally occurring oleic acid and unsaponifiable components make it useful in balms and body products designed for dry, rough or weather-exposed skin.

In Skin Botanist formulas, olive oil adds a slower, more cushioning finish than lighter carrier oils.

Research and evidence

We do not choose ingredients because they sound natural. We look at supplier quality, formulation role and available research before an ingredient earns a place in a Skin Botanist formula. For customers who want to go deeper, the reputable research papers and source notes we have reviewed are listed below.

Research note

A dermatology review of vegetable oils and butters describes olive oil as part of a group of plant lipids with wound-healing relevance, linked to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin-barrier repair activity. It also notes that plant oils can support repair processes including cell proliferation, collagen synthesis and dermal reconstruction.

Research note

Research on olive-oil phenolic compounds highlights hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleocanthal as bioactive plant compounds studied for skin-health pathways, including fibroblast activity, tissue regeneration and wound-healing support.

Formulation note
Chosen for the sensitive-skin range because it brings a rich, cushioning oil phase to simple water-free formulas. Olive oil helps create a slower, more comforting finish for dry or easily unsettled skin, especially when balanced with lighter oils and butters.

Customer feedback has often described the sensitive-skin formulas as calming and comfortable during periods of dryness, irritation or flare-prone skin. We keep this language careful: the ingredient is included to support softness, comfort and barrier-feel, not to treat or diagnose a skin condition.
